How to use the construction estimate template

The template is a spreadsheet built for contractors who want an accurate bid without spending an hour on formatting. Open the CSV in Excel or Google Sheets and follow these five steps.

  1. Fill in the project info block — client name, project address, estimate number, and date. Set a "valid until" date so pricing doesn't stay open forever.
  2. Enter quantities and unit costs by trade. The Total column multiplies quantity × unit cost automatically.
  3. Add or delete rows to fit the scope. A kitchen remodel won't need excavation; a new build will.
  4. Apply markup. Overhead covers your business costs, profit is your target margin, and contingency protects against surprises.
  5. Send it. Export to PDF for the client, or move to Foremio when you want tracking, e-signature, and online payment.

Why a good estimate template matters

Most bidding losses come from missed line items and inconsistent markup — not from being priced too high. A structured template forces you to think through every trade, apply the same overhead and profit on every job, and produce a total you can defend when the client pushes back.

From template to professional estimating software

Spreadsheets are a great starting point. But once you're bidding regularly, they slow you down — you re-enter the same items, you can't track whether the client opened the estimate, and there's no path to signature or payment.

Foremio keeps everything from this template and adds AI blueprint takeoffs, reusable rate books, sent/viewed/accepted tracking, e-signature, and Stripe payments. Same line-item structure — just faster and more accurate.
